What does this bird’s call sound like?
These large water birds are mostly resident and can be seen gliding across Langstone Harbour’s sheltered waters year-round. They feed on aquatic vegetation, often upending in shallow waters to reach submerged plants. Mute Swans form long-term pair bonds and build large nests near the water’s edge, using reeds and grasses.
During the breeding season, they can be fiercely territorial, defending their nests with surprising aggression. Their presence adds a sense of calm and elegance to the harbour, and they are a familiar sight to visitors.
As a species that thrives in undisturbed wetlands, mute swans are also a good indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems.
