Many of the film location for the iconic 1975 British rock musical ‘Tommy’, featuring The Who and Elton John’s music, were filmed locally around Eastney and Hilsea.
Film locations include Eastney beach huts, the eSouthsea Lido, South Parade Pier Southsea, Kings Theatre in Southsea, Southsea Castle, St Tomas’s Church in Warblington, Langstone’s Mill Lane, Warblington Castle, Fort Purbrook, Idsworth House near Horndean and All Saints Church in Portsmouth.
Tommy is a 1975 British musical fantasy drama film written and directed by Ken Russell. It was based on The Who’s 1969 rock opera album ‘Tommy’ about a deaf, mute and blind boy who becomes a pinball champion and semi-religious leader.
The film featured a star-studded cast, including Elton John and the members of The Who themselves. This included the band’s lead singer Roger Daltrey, who played the title role. It also starred Oliver Reed, Ann-Margret, Eric Clapton, Jack Nicholson, Robert Powell and Tina Turner.
